Signs of Dental Aging or Gum Disease? | Dr. Jenny Miller DMD

You know, normally if people have concerns about the look or appearance of their smile, they can pinpoint what that is. Occasionally, people say I have spaces at my gum line, which we call black triangles. Maybe it looks like they have black pepper in their teeth? That type of question comes up, and those things can be restored with veneers or composites, in a very conservative manner. But there are ways to treat that. Occasionally, those spaces in the gum line are only due to gum disease and periodontal disease. Occasionally, they are due to age. As we get older, our gum line does recede slightly, our teeth erupt a little further and then the natural taper in our teeth will leave spaces. But it does raise a question, do we have gum disease or not?

Our 18th Wedding Anniversary

On August 8th, Neil and I celebrated 18 years of marriage! We spent some time reflecting on how life together started and how life has changed so dramatically since then. Ours is a unique love story in the fact that we actually first met when Neil was 9 and I was 11 years old. Our families lived in Harrodsburg at the time. We met each other at our friends (they were brother and sister) house. We all played together…kickball, hide and seek and baseball. Neil was always so mean to me but somehow I always secretly liked him. He finally agreed to be my “boyfriend” under the agreement that I did not tell anyone. My family had to move away to Carrollton and coincidentally his family rented our house that we were leaving. Nine years later I ran into Neil’s sister at UK…I gathered up the courage to call him…the day we re-met we stayed up the entire night talking about everything and anything. A year later we were married and started our family with a new beagle puppy named Shooby. We graduated, me from dental school and he from dental lab school, within days from one another. The next 12 years brought major life changes each and every year…we moved a few times, we had three children; Layne, Emily, Evan. Life brought us back to Lexington where we have developed and grown our dental clinic and lab together and built that house we had talked about aspiring for during that first all night conversation. Layne is now in high school, Emily in middle school and our baby Evan is already the age that Neil and I were when we first met. This past spring our puppy, Shooby, finally found a soft spot in the fresh grass near our house as his final resting place…17 1/2 years old. My grandparents will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in a few weeks. I look forward to the journey to our 65th anniversary with Neil.

“Field of Dreams” night at Applebees Park with the Lexington Legends

Our daughter, Emily, participated in the “Field of Dreams” night with the Lexington Legends. Her entire “Allstars” softball team was invited to run out on the field with the players and be recognized for their achievements as a team this year. Emily’s position is catcher and she really loves to play the game! With all three of our kids playing either softball or baseball we spend our entire summers at the ballpark…and we love every minute of it!

The Health Benefits of Metal Free Dentistry | Lexington KY | Neil Miller

The health benefits associated with Metal Free Dentistry as a whole are very important to discuss. The reason we don’t like metal in the mouth because anytime you look in a mouth that has no dentistry in it, a natural mouth, there is no metal in it.  So, if we can avoid using metal in the mouth, that would always be our preference.

Types of Metal Free Fillings | Porcelain Fillings versus Composite Fillings | Lexington KY | Jenny Miller DMD

Metal Free Fillings. There are two options as far as metal free fillings go.  One can be a composite resin material that the dentist places directly in the tooth.  The other is a porcelain material that is fabricated in a dental lab and then is placed on at second appointment and bonded to the tooth. They are very important not only for the aesthetics, the appearance of the tooth, and that they are tooth colored and blend seamlessly with the tooth. They are also important because they are bonded to the tooth.
